This medium-sized shrub is an attractive foliage plant with very fine leaves, similar in appearance to some of the more dainty Japanese maple cultivars from a distance. These are a bright green in spring and summer, turning a lovely golden yellow in autumn before falling. The small, greenish-white flowers aren't very showy but attract bees and are followed by red berries which ripen to black in September. In winter, once the leaves have fallen, the attractive, pale-grey bark with its very conspicuous lenticels can be easily seen.
