Sometimes referred to as the wedding cake shrub, this is a large shrub with wide-spreading, tiered branches and lacecap heads of creamy white flowers in early summer. It’s perfect for growing as a specimen shrub in a mixed border and also works well in Japanese-style garden schemes. Deeply veined, dark green leaves, turn red purple in autumn. Avoid pruning which will spoil the natural shape.
